‘I still get nervous when I go on stage!’

What’s it like to face a crowd of thousands? T’Pau’s Carol Decker, 59, reveals all…

-

Hi, Carol! best came to see you at Rewind last year. You were amazing. How many times have you done the festival now?

It’s got to be at least 10. I actually live in Henley – where Rewind first started – and the promoter was a friend of mine, so I did the first few in a row.

What did you think when you were asked to take part?

I was thrilled. Nostalgia is a huge thing for people who grew up in the 80s. When you’re staring out at thousands of people, it’s actually very exciting! That said, I still get nervous. I still feel the butterflies in my tummy and hope everything’s going to go all right because I always care that I’m going to do it properly and not let people down.

What do you miss about the 80s?

Going on Top Of The Pops! Things have changed so much – all these different platforms for music exist now, which weren’t around when I was younger. That said, I didn’t actually hang out with anyone like Boy George back in the day because everyone was busy with their own individual things, and it was quite competitive. Now, though, these fantastic festivals bring us all together, so we get to spend time with one another. There’s no scandal, we all just have some wine and a bit of a laugh, and talk about how our kids are doing!

Is performing harder now?

Yes. I was never a late-night person, even when I was younger. I have two kids – Scarlett, 18, and Dylan, 14 – and when they were little, there was just so much to organise. It takes it out of you. Now, I can leave Scarlett to look after Dylan if I’ve got a gig, so that makes things easier. I also have to keep fit and work out a lot, or I get tired on stage.

Do your children enjoy listening to your music?

Scarlett likes bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but she’s very proud of me. Dylan’s much more into pop, so he really loves T’Pau!

What are your fans like now?

They’re still as passionate as they were 30 years ago. Maybe one of my records helped them through heartbreak, or it was a first dance at a wedding… I really value that.

What are your key festival survival tips?

Pack sensibly! Always take a mac and umbrella because the weather can go either way. Wellies are essential – and some Nurofen for the morning after! T’Pau play Rewind Scotland and North. For more info, visit rewindfestival.com Carol Decker’s autobiography Heart and Soul is out now.
