1 THE EARLY BIRD…

Planning ahead for any day trips you want to take can make a massive difference when it comes to saving cash. Whenever possible, book online in advance before heading out, as you will find there are often discounts of as much as 15 per cent on family tickets.

2 PREPARATION IS KEY

The cost of dining at family attractions, especially during the summer holidays, can be extortionate, but a bit of simple pre-planning could save you forking out for a huge catering bill. Why not pack your kids’ favourite sandwiches and snacks – getting them to help prepare them – and eat together for a fraction of the cost?

3 ON THE BUSES

Although many love the convenience of getting from A to B by car, the cost of driving your kids around can soon add up to eye-watering amounts. Travelling by bus saves on petrol, avoids the stress of parking, and can also create a sense of adventure for kids. For extra savings, tickets for Arriva buses, which operate over most of the UK, can be bought via the M-ticket app. For more info, visit arrivabus.co.uk

4 COMMUNITY FUN TIME

There are plenty of free activities to take advantage of this summer, so get involved with community groups in your area and check the local paper to see what’s available on your doorstep. You could also look on Facebook for local groups organising fun, free events for kids. It’s a great money-saver, and the perfect way to meet families in your neighbourhood.

5 THE GREAT OUTDOORS

The UK is home to breathtaking historic landscapes, so why not invest in a National Trust membership? Available for £9.55 a month, you get free entry to over 500 locations, free parking, and a handbook to help you plan your visits.

6 SILVER SCREEN

The cost of a family cinema trip can make it tempting to wait for the DVD release, but taking the little ones to a movie doesn’t have to be pricey. You can often get tickets for half the usual price at early-morning screenings. Ahhh, peace and quiet!
