BEHIND THE SCENES WITH best ‘I plucked my eyebrows aged nine–mum was horrified!’
The Body Fixers’ trusty beautician, April DeAustin, 26, talks to best about all things beauty – and bringing out the best in people...
Hi, April! What’s your favourite part of your job?
Seeing people gain confidence. People come in and they’ve lost a part of themselves. Giving that back to them has been amazing. This whole industry can seem shallow and superficial, but seeing people become the best versions of themselves is my favourite thing.
Does it get emotional sometimes?
Definitely. There have been a few times where I’ve had to hold back tears, and times when I just haven’t even been able to.
Did you always want to be a beautician?
Yes, actually I did. My mum’s a hairdresser; I used to go to her salon and I really liked what they were doing. I plucked my eyebrows when I was nine and my mum was like, ‘What have you done?!’
Were they a disaster then?
No, they looked amazing! Mum then asked me to do hers and her friends. I’d make £5 for doing eyebrows, so I started then really. It’s nice for busy women to have time for themselves, even if it’s just a quick eyebrow shape, or [manicured] nails.
What’s the biggest trend you’re seeing in beauty?
In my field, it’s thick eyebrows – everybody wants to know
how they can get them! Eye treatments, too, like lash-lifts and eyebrow extensions. And tattooing – that’s huge.
Would you get any cosmetic work done yourself?
I wouldn’t get anything done now, but maybe when I’m older… I’ve seen Botox done well, and Dr Esho does such a great job. I’d have no problem going to him when I’m older if that became a source of insecurity for me.
Describe Body Fixers in three words...
Emotional, extreme... empowering.
