What’s up with Céline?

Every day she looks more outrageous, but are Céline Dion’s frightful fashion fails really a cry for help?

-

In Europe recently for a series of live shows, singing superstar Céline Dion, 49, hit the headlines as much for her gaunt appearance as her odd outfit choices, including flower-power suits and an all-white ensemble with widebrimmed hat and cape.

These outfits have become a signature look since the singer tragically lost both her husband, René Angélil, and brother, Daniel, to cancer last year – they died within two days of each other. At the time, Céline confessed, ‘I’ll probably grieve for the rest of my life.’

One wonders if those outfits, and her alarmingly skinny frame, are signs that the trauma of Céline’s terrible double loss is taking its toll.

There have also been episodes of what some might call eccentric behaviour – such as the time in Paris when the French-Canadian star was spotted striking a series of yoga poses outside her hotel.

As psychotherapist Michaela McCarthy (theawarenesscentre.com) tells best, ‘There’s been much speculation as to whether Céline is working too hard, has become too thin, or that her sometimes eccentric fashion choices point to underlying mental health issues.

‘Perhaps she should take some time out, instead of throwing herself into work.’

Michaela adds, ‘It’s possible that this apparent addiction to ever more expensive apparel could indicate trouble beneath, and that she is deflecting her grief by adopting a new, bolder, fashion-forward persona.

‘However, 18 months [since Céline’s bereavement] is still relatively early days. Everyone reacts to loss in their own way.’

Now back in the US, Céline is preparing for her fourmonth-long residency in Las Vegas from September.

As she does what she does best – performing – we hope that Céline gets all the love and support she needs.
