It’s the showbiz news that shocked the nation. In June, TV favourite Ant McPartlin checked into rehab, following what was revealed as a two-year battle with prescription drugs and an addiction to alcohol, prompted by agonising pain from a knee injury and a subsequent operation.
While his road to recovery is evidently far from over, the TV star, 41, has completed two months in rehab – and has opened up about the understandable tensions his personal struggles have put on his 11-year marriage to Lisa, 40.
‘I’ve put Lisa through hell with mood swings and depression, and how it affects you,’ said Ant, who co-hosts I’m A Celeb…, Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain’s Got Talent with TV partner and best mate, Declan Donnelly, 41.
‘I’m very sorry about the effect it has on partners. This kind of stuff puts strain on any marriage,’ he added.
The couple were teenage sweethearts, having met in 1994, and dated for 12 years, before getting married in July 2006 in Buckinghamshire.
Although praising Lisa, who works as a make-up artist for Strictly Come Dancing, as being ‘fantastic throughout’ his time in rehab, Ant admitted he was ‘desperately worried’ about his wife throughout his treatment – especially not being able to speak to her for a few weeks.
And when asked whether he thinks the marriage can survive the undeniable strain, Ant honestly answered, ‘Time will tell. It’s very personal.’
Sadly, this isn’t the first time the couple have had their problems. In 2013, Ant opened up about their struggle to start a family, stating they had been trying to conceive for three years at that time.
‘I would love to have kids. We’re trying. It’s tougher than you think when you get older,’ he said ruefully.
Four years on, Ant notably used the past tense in his most recent interview, stating simply, ‘ We’ve struggled.’
Ant explained he will follow doctors’ orders about a potential return with Dec to co-host I’m A Celeb… this November.
