‘I’d love to style Brooklyn Beckham’

-

Matt Edmondson, 31, is on hand to hook up singletons in his new show – but it’s not his first try at matchmaking!

Tell us about where you got the idea for the show…

I asked my wife what she wanted for her birthday – she said some clothes. I had a very limited window, went to Topshop, and found it totally overwhelming. All I could think was, ‘This is awful. Imagine doing this for someone you didn’t know!’

How did your choice go down with your wife?

I got a knitted jumper with little pearl balls stitched onto it. I thought it was cutesy. She wore it, but I found it so stressful and would never do it again. I’d be a terrible contestant on this show!

Do the contestants fare better, or are there fashion disasters along the way?

There are so many funny moments where people really mess it up! We’ve had people buy completely the wrong sizes. Then one girl got so carried away trying to find a nice top for the guy she forgot to buy trousers – he had to come out in his boxers!

What’s the biggest fashion faux pas you’ve ever had?

When I was on CBBC, I dressed so badly that they sent me out with a stylist. We bought a leather jacket, but it was only when I got it home that I realised it had a huge motif emblazoned with the phrase, ‘Vietnam – if you ain’t been there, shut your mouth!’ I’ve not seen the stylist since…

Some people hit it off on the show, but have you ever played matchmaker before?

I convinced my friend Alice Levine from Radio 1 to go on a dating app. I said it would be fun and that

I’d be in charge of who she matched with. I matched with a few guys and started talking to them as if I were her, and then set her up on a date. They got on well, but unfortunately there wasn’t the romantic spark, so it sadly didn’t pan out… I should have gone dressed as Alice!

If there was a celebrity version of the show, who would you like to see?

I’d quite like to get – and we’d never get him – but Brooklyn Beckham. He’s super-stylish and I think people would have a real idea of what would look cool on him. He’d be my number one choice! Dress To Impress is on ITV2, weekdays, at 6pm
