Carbohydra­tes are an essential part of our diet, along with protein and fat. They are used for energy, keeping our muscles and essential organs working. Put simply, there are two types of carbohydra­tes: simple sugars, such as sweets, fruit juice and the sugar you put in your tea; and complex carbohydra­tes, which are starches like bread, pasta and potatoes. Both types become glucose in the body and are used as an energy source.
