Alex Jones’s baby fears

She was almost 40 when she became a mum... could it be too late for Alex Jones to give her baby son a sibling?

- WORDS: RACHEL CUNNINGHAM

When The One Show co-host Alex Jones gave birth to her first child, Teddy, in January, shortly before her 40th birthday, she became part of a growing number of women overjoyed to become first-time mums later in life.

But being an older mum throws up its own unique set of worries.

After marrying husband Charlie Thomson on New Year’s Eve 2015, Alex was thrilled to get pregnant without any major obstacles.

And, as she prepares for her first Christmas as a mum, Alex has opened up about wanting a second baby, saying, ‘Because [Teddy’s] been such a joy, it would be great to give him a sibling.’

But she has shared fears that she and Charlie may not be so lucky next time.

‘ You just don’t know,’ Alex confessed. ‘It was easy the first time. Will it be as straightforward again?’

The self-proclaimed ‘ heart-on-my-sleeve type girl’ explained, ‘I strongly feel I wouldn’t have been the same mother 10 years ago because I was still building my career. I wouldn’t have had the patience that I do now… I was still scrabbling around working, whereas now I feel I am reaching the peak.’

When it comes down to it, Alex says there’s no question of what’s more important to her. ‘My main aim in life was to have a family at whatever cost. So, I would never have not had a baby.’ The Welsh presenter’s own mother went through early menopause at 43, something that can be genetic. As part of her TV show, Alex Jones: Fertility And Me, she underwent fertility tests herself and, thankfully, the results were reassuring.

‘I’m so glad… but I am aware that really it’s pot luck, isn’t it? Having one doesn’t mean a second will come easily,’ she said. ‘It would be great to give him a sibling, but we can’t take it for granted that it will happen.’

In addition to her fears about her ability to fall pregnant again, Alex shared a worry. She said, ‘If Teddy has a child at the same age as us, we’ll be 80… there’s a whole missing generation where children might not have grandparents.’
