I’ve passed my phobia on...

-

Years ago, while on holiday in Italy, my husband and I were followed through deserted streets late one night by a large pack of stray dogs. We escaped unscathed, but it left me with a deep-seated fear of dogs. I’ve tried not to pass it on to my little boy, but he almost jumps whenever he sees a dog. I don’t want him to

develop my phobia. What should I do about it?

How scary. If I’d been chased by dogs, I’d have a deep-rooted fear, too. I think you’re right, though, to try to ensure your son doesn’t develop the same fear. A good first port of call is a marvellous charity called The Dogs Trust, which runs six-week workshops about being safe in the company of dogs and building confidence around them.
