‘Harry has found a place in the heart soft he world’

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH best

- Royal author Katie Nicholl gives us an insight into Prince Harry and his upcoming nuptials. Most people don’t realise that in

When did you first meet Prince Harry?

I was a showbiz reporter and bumped into him on a hotel roof terrace. He invited me to a party. He was 17 and he should have been revising for A levels, but there he was – all Vodka Red Bulls, Marlboro Lights and pretty blondes. I liked him immediately.

Doesn’t everyone have a soft spot for Harry?

I think it’s hard not to think of the 12-year-old boy following his mother’s coffin. He’s found a place in the hearts of the world. We’ve watched him grow up – and struggle, at times – and, while he could so easily have gone off the rails, he has really proved himself.

What do you think are his proudest achievements?

Afghanistan, he wasn’t at all molly-coddled, he was in as much danger as anyone. And then of course there’s Invictus. The role of the ‘spare’ has been a complex one – look at Prince Andrew and Princess Margaret – but Harry has found himself a purpose.

And now he has found love!

Indeed and, of course, on the surface, Meghan doesn’t seem like Harry’s usual type. She’s not blonde, she’s not aristocratic – she’s older than him, she’s a divorcee. All those break the mould. But when you really understand Harry – it’s not so much of a surprise, he’s always had his own way of doing things. And Meghan proved very early on

that she can handle the pressure – I think that’s a weight lifted.

Can you give us any clues about the wedding?

I think Meghan will be a model royal bride, but she’ll put her own stamp on it. As for the dress – if I was a betting girl, I’d be going for Ralph & Russo. They’re show-stoppers – and Meghan is a fashionista at heart. I’m sure she’ll look amazing.
