Ross needs those wake-up calls

-

Irish actor Aidan Turner, 34, set hearts a-flutter with his scythe wielding, shirtless turn in Poldark. Aidan is tight-lipped about his private life, but is said to be single.

So, we’re dying to know – how are things with Ross and Demelza this series?

Ross realises how fragile their relationship is, and how awfully he has treated her and what it feels like to be at the other end of that. But he doesn’t want to lose her. Ross sometimes needs those wake-up calls as he’s not always aware how he affects other people. It isn’t till the tables are turned that he realises what he’s done.

Is he jealous about Demelza and Hugh’s relationship?

Well he’s not sure what has happened between them, but regardless, it affects him a lot as he realises. There was more emotion involved than a fleeting attraction. He sees Demelza has fallen for Hugh and understands what it’s about as he has been through the same with Elizabeth. He knows it’s complicated and there’s a lot at stake.

Is he able to tell Demelza how he feels?

Emotionally, he has always been inarticulate, and he doesn’t know what to say. Demelza is not only someone he loves, but greatly admires so it’s very difficult. He’s confused by all of that and he feels scared to lose her and his family, so it’s a very tentative time.

But they do spend time in London together, don’t they?

Yes, and it felt like their second honeymoon. It was nice for Ross to have fun with Demelza and

find that love again as it had been lost for a while. They have been through so much and allowed themselves to get bogged down with life.

And how is Ross’s political career going?

He is starting to realise that people are attracted to his energy and listen to him. It was nice to think that Jack Farthing [who plays George Warleggan] and I have made it all the way from the first series throwing ourselves around in taverns to sitting in the House of Commons staring each other down. Those kind of moments are always great.

Poldark is on Sunday, BBC One, 9pm
