IS THERE A HEALTHY WAY TO ENJOY ALCOHOL?

Angie: I’m not a lover of fizzy drinks, as they make your bones and teeth soft. They are also very fattening – but I do love the bubbles in Champagne.

Boringly, I’m very good at knowing when I’ve had enough, which is handy when you want your nights to end without drama!

As we move into summer, lots of us are thinking about the dreaded bikini.

If you’d like to be the one with the flat stomach on the beach this year then let’s start with the alcohol you drink, and how much.

Firstly, my best advice for ‘loving your liver’ is to only drink clear alcohol, such as gin and vodka. These spirits are the kindest to your liver. Avoid fizzy mixers, as they are sugarladen weight gainers.

Some studies say wine is healthier, because it contains the antioxidant resveratrol, said to reduce bad cholesterol and the risk of depression, cancer and diabetes. But you can find resveratrol in peanuts, grapes, blueberries and dark chocolate.

Now, let’s decide how much to drink? Experts say you should have at least three drink-free days a week – I say, go for four!

And if you are having a drink, think of the money you’d save and the calories you’d lose if you learn to say ‘no’ to a top up.

Invest in smaller glasses and keep a tab on how many drinks you are actually having. It’s very easy if you are enjoying a drink at home to have more than you realise. At least in a pub you have to keep going back to the bar.

Your reward is a healthier, slimmer you – what great motivation! Also, did you know alcohol can be a cause of seven types of cancer, including throat, liver, colon, rectum and breast? Neither did I!

A recent poll suggests the public wants to be informed of the risks, so consider yourself informed. Cheers!
