Why we’re loving Harry’s boys

This year’s unassuming England squad are a whole different ball game...

- WORDS: SHELLEY MARSDEN

Harry Kane and the boys of the England team kicked off their World Cup adventure in Russia as they mean to go on with a storming match against Tunisia.

And the action was watched by 21 million viewers at home – more than the 18 million that watched Prince Harry and Meghan get hitched, or this year’s BGT final!

‘Harry the hero’ was how Gary Lineker described the 24-year-old England captain’s incredible performance, after he scored two goals in their opening match in Volgograd.

And pregnant Christine Lampard’s husband, playerturned-pundit Frank, was equally bowled over by Harry’s performance, saying, ‘Harry is a superstar, and that is why we talk about these superstars, because they turn up at the right moment and score goals.’

Asked recently how he defined success, Harry – who is engaged to his high school sweetheart Katie Goodland, with whom he has a little girl, Ivy, adorably answered, ‘Being able to provide for my family – especially now, having a daughter and another child on the way. Being there for them.’

But it’s not just that amiable Harry and his team, led by thoughtful boss Gareth Southgate, are delivering – these ‘quiet men’ are doing it with minimal fuss.

The team also have the least caps between them of any England team playing in the World Cup to date – in other words, they’re relatively inexperienced, but they are proving their worth.

It’s a far cry from the days of flashy players like David Beckham, John Terry and Wayne Rooney. Talented they were, but they spent as much time partying and parading their cars as scoring goals!

This time round it feels like we’re watching a young team playing good football and crossing everything for how far they can go.

We’re rooting for them all the way! Do your best, lads!
