GIVE A DOG A BREAK

Pet-friendly accommodation is on the rise, with many now choosing to holiday with their fourlegged friends. Here, veterinary training manager Kellie Ceccarelli shares her top tips to ensure you and your pooch have the best staycation possible...

STICK TO A ROUTINE

It’s important to keep your dog as settled as possible by ensuring minimum disruption to his or her usual routine. Remember to keep feeding time the same, and try to stick to the same walking schedule.

DON’T DITCH THE DIET

Just because you’re indulging, it doesn’t mean your pet should. Although puppy-dog eyes might be hard to resist, feeding titbits can result in an upset stomach. Hydration is important, so pack a water bottle and fold-up bowl to take with you when you’re out and about.

PREPARATION IS KEY

If your pooch takes medication, make sure you have plenty with you. Make a note of the nearest vet and their contact details before you head off. It’s also a good idea to check all microchip details are up to date, just in case you become separated.

Exploring the beach and taking a dip in the sea can be fun, but first make sure your dog is allowed, as many beaches have restrictions during summer. It’s also worth making sure you know your dog’s limitations in the water. After taking a dip, give your dog a good rinse, as salt and minerals could cause damage to their coat.
