Calum: Holidays… we all love them. A chance to let your hair down and have fun.

For lots of people, that means overindulg­ing on the cocktails, local wine or filling (and re-filling!) your plate at the hotel buffet.

I know what I’m talking about. I used to really go for it on holiday.

As soon as I got off that plane, and felt the sun on my face, I wanted a drink.

I actually used to get so pissed the first day or night, I’d spend the rest of my holiday feeling rough! Sound familiar? Well, nowadays, I’ve learned to keep it in check. I still like to enjoy a few exotic drinks and sample lovely, local food… but I mix that with some healthy living, too.

Let me explain: I pick one or two days when I can drink. The rest I choose to be on the ball.

Although it’s only a week or two weeks, if you spend the whole time drinking and eating three extra portions of chips, the aftereffec­ts will stay with you all year.

Instead, add some balance to the mix. It might help you to imagine how you want to feel after your hols – refreshed, invigorate­d and sunkissed?

So, I’d say, have a few drinks but aim to keep it in check.

The same with food. Have a really good look at that hotel buffet and remind yourself that all those croissants/chips/ moussaka will all be there again tomorrow – so maybe just have a salad this meal time!

I’m not being a killjoy, but build in a healthy balance.

Do some research while you’re sightseein­g. Check out healthy places to eat.

Maybe book a hotel that has a gym, or plan long walks on the beach – and take advantage of that pool! Instead of floating round on a lilo, get in the water (or the sea!) and do some lengths.

The sea is one of nature’s best healers, and splashing around in the waves is good for the soul!

My best advice is to end a holiday on a good clear note. Don’t come home with a hangover. Happy holidays!
