Love Island’s Dr Alex

As a mother of two sons, it’s difficult to watch Dr Alex in the Love Island villa…

- WORDS: SHELLEY MARSDEN

Apart from the fact that he’s lazing by a pool in the sun every day, the hapless Dr Alex George has had a pretty brutal time on reality TV show Love Island.

Though popular with his fellow contestants in the villa, the Welsh doctor, 27, just hasn’t set pulses racing – and some of his attempts to get close to the ladies have been excruciating to watch.

Even his parents, mum Jane, a bank manager, and dad Antony, a retired police officer – who revealed Alex was ‘ headhunted’ rather than applying – have admitted that watching their son makes for painful viewing.

Early on, his dad commented, ‘He’s not doing very well, is he?’ and not much has changed since. Alex has struggled to move beyond the ‘friend zone’ with anyone, and when things do go further, he’s faced with suggestions the girl is faking it to get ahead.

But why? He’s a nicelooking guy, he’s polite, smart and a lot more natural than some of the buff, preening idiots in there. I’d be incensed if this were my son.

The A&E doctor, who works at the University Hospital Lewisham in London, has a bit of an awkward, bumbling way with the ladies. So much so that some amused fans have even suggested he’s the ‘Hugh Grant of Love Island’. Sadly, he’s had little of Hugh’s luck with the ladies.

What Alex has been from the get-go, however, is a total gentleman, which is more than can be said for some of the boys (Josh, Adam, anyone?).

If my two sons – currently just three and five – grow up to treat women with half the sensitivity and grace Alex displayed initially, I’d feel like I’d done my job well. But there’s no way I’d want them to apply for Love Island, where it seems the cruder, more heartless you are with a woman, the further you go.

Worryingly, the pressure to ‘couple up’ seems to be getting to Alex, too – and rocking his morals. It was, for instance, pretty horrid to hear him say in one episode that he’d put romantic interest Charlie Williams ‘on the subs bench’ so he could spend the night with Grace Wardle, for some ‘pillow talk’. Eek. Not you, Alex!

Part of me wants him to find his girl in there. But a bigger part thinks this is simply not gentle Alex’s natural habitat – and that he needs to be put out of his misery and leave the predatory villa, pronto!

Love Island continues nightly (except Saturdays) at 9pm on ITV2 Leave the boy alone!
