THE HEAT IS ON!

-

While making the most of the heat, it’s worth remembering how important it is to keep your four-legged friend safe. Follow this advice from Stuart Simons, Furminator’s expert groomer, to keep your canine cool and comfortable...

If you haven’t already, speak to your vet about sun cream for your pooch. This is particularly important if your dog has a light skin pigment or short hair, as this makes them prone to sunburn. Remember to pay special attention to the tips of their ears and top of their nose.

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day, and try to avoid pavements. This is because dogs perspire through their food pads, so the longer they stand on a hot floor, the less quickly they can cool down. Make sure you take plenty of water and a travel bowl out with you, that way they can easily enjoy water on the go. You might find that changing to an evening walk could be the best solution.

Look out for the signs. If your dog appears to be excessively panting, has particularly red eyes or gums, feels weak or collapses, use a cool wet towel or ice pack to bring down their temperature and call a vet immediately.

Like most of us, your pooch will be more sweatier than usual, which can make him or her smell. A bath is a great way to give your pet a pamper at home – try Furmintator’s range of shampoos and conditioners, from £10, which are free from parabens and artificial colours.
