Cash advice

Council tax is a significant monthly expenditure, but the Financially Fabulous money team says if you live alone, have a student in the house or are a carer, you could be entitled to a discount – or even a refund. Here’s how to claim...

-

1 LIVING ALONE

A full council tax bill is based on at least two adults living together, but if you live alone or with no other adult, you can get a 25 per cent discount on your tax bill – a huge saving that definitely helps your bank balance.

2 STUDENTS

Young adults don’t need to pay council tax while they live in an all-student house at university. Exemption forms can be found on university websites. If they live with you and are a full-time student, you’re eligible for a 25 per cent discount. Anyone on an accredited apprentice scheme is also entitled, as well as student nurses. See www.gov.uk/council-tax/who-has-to-pay.

3 ILLNESS AND DISABILITY

Up to 100,000 people aren’t claiming this benefit when they should be. It gives a 100 per cent discount to anyone who has been medically certified as being severely mentally impaired. This can include illnesses such as dementia and Parkinson’s, or someone who has had a stroke. Plus, there is a 25 per cent discount for anyone living with or caring for them. To qualify, you’ll need confirmation from a doctor.

4 DISCOUNT DUE?

Most councils will want you to fill out a claim form if you’re applying for a discount. Find out details at www.gov.uk/apply-council-taxreduction. If you’ve being overpaying, you can apply for a refund, too. You’ll need to write to your local authority with proof.

5 CORRECT BAND?

Over 400,000 households in the UK aren’t in the correct band and could be overpaying unnecessarily. For more information about your council tax band, visit www.gov.uk/council-tax. FACEBOOK.COM/BESTMAGAZINE
