‘HEARTBROKEN’

Newsreader Kate Silverton

-

For BBC newsreader Kate Silverton, who is partnered with Aljaž Škorjanec, life hasn’t always been plain sailing. Now a doting mum to Clemency, six, and Wilbur, four, Kate once thought motherhood was an impossible dream.

Having lost an ovary in life-saving emergency surgery at 29, Kate was convinced that her chances of conceiving were little to none.

Doctors at the time told her that it was ‘highly unlikely’. Then, at 37, Kate met the man of her dreams, security consultant Mike Heron, and she began a series of gruelling fertility treatments – all of which resulted in failure. ‘I’d been told I was out of time. I was heartbroken at the thought of not being a mother,’ she said in an interview.

When the journalist did fall pregnant, she had a miscarriage scare. ‘It seemed like a cruel twist of fate,’ she admitted, until she was told, ‘ Your baby is still here,’ after an emergency scan. ‘ We saw a bright light on the ultrasound screen and, this time, there was a little waving arm.’ It’s hard to imagine the roller-coaster of emotions Kate must have experienced.

Now doing something that couldn’t be further removed from her usual TV gig, all this glamorous 48-year-old has to worry about is whether she’s nailed this week’s dance moves! She certainly seems to be having a ball in rehearsals, even though her size-nine feet have meant she needed her dancing shoes made for her: ‘The Strictly shoes only go up to a size eight, so they had to have another pair made specially. I just hope I don’t fall over!’
