‘Matronmadeuscrywithlaughter’

How absolutely spiffing! Enid Blyton’s delightful series of books about the goings-on at a girls’ boarding school have been made into a drama, MaloryTowers. Ella Bright, 13, is the young actress playing main character Darrell Rivers.

How did you feel when you got the part?

My mum gave me a gift and when I opened it, it was the first MaloryTowers book. I knew when I saw it that I got the part and I was so excited I just buried my face in it. It was a long process, so it was amazing to finally hear the news.

What’s your character like?

Darrell is strong, kind and loyal. She sometimes has a hot temper, and always seems to know what’s best. She has a big heart and always tries to do the right thing.

How do other people see Darrell?

People look up to her for being kind, positive and happy. They see her as a strong leader.

What’s the relationship between Darrell and Gwen?

I wouldn’t call them enemies, but they do dislike each other at times. I think Darrell finds

Gwen annoying with her spoiled ways, but can feel sorry for her.

Matron is quite scary in the show – what’s she like in real-life?

Ashley, who plays Matron, is one of the funniest people I have ever met. There were some scenes where she improvised and made everyone on set practically cry with laughter.

Why should people watch?

Because it brings a classic book to life and, although it takes place in post-war Britain, it still covers issues people can relate to – especially in the current crisis.

If you were having a midnight feast, what would you want to eat? Oh, definitely stroopwafels, candyfloss and some sweets. l Malory Towers is on BBC iPlayer
