Kara Tointon: ‘Postponing our wedding? Worse things can happen…’

Actress Kara Tointon on delays to tying the knot and a new ghost story on Sky…

-

Beautiful, talented and lovedup with her Norwegian fiancé, chiropractor Marius Jensen, Kara Tointon – mum to the couple’s son, Frey – has had an OK year, all told! The 37-year-old, who appears in Sky’s cult series Urban Myths, tells us more…

Your cameo is in an episode of Urban Myths about the ghost of Handel meeting Jimi Hendrix, as the musicians lived in the same building 246 years apart. How was it?

It’s a great mash-up of randomness and comedy. The year is 1743, and I play Kitty Clive, who was a real actress from London – a fun, feisty girl who would sing Handel’s work, and fought for actresses to be taken seriously. I was like Marie Antoinette with this silver/white wig, the big cage under the dress and bustle at the back. I didn’t recognise myself!

You also brought out a storytelling app this year, didn’t you?

Yes, ‘Tell’, with my fiancé, Marius. It’s a library of fairy tales – kids request a story from their grandparents, then grandma can record herself reading to them.

How has your family been?

Frey’s two in November – we were lucky there. He’s blissfully unaware of what’s going on. I loved being in the ‘mummy zone’, cooking, playing and enjoying him.

You postponed your wedding, no?

In Norway, yes! But we hadn’t got far, we didn’t have to cancel or rebook anything. Nobody’s ill – it’s annoying but not the worst thing. We go with the flow.

What got you through the dips?

The odd Bloody Mary and interior design programmes. I love Your Home Made Perfect and Grand Designs – it’s where I get my comfort. Oh, and cake. This year’s been about baking and eating.

Can you believe it’s 10 years since you won Strictly?

I know! In one respect, time flies. In other ways, so much has happened in the decade since. This year, more than ever, I can’t wait. Strictly is the perfect build-up to Christmas, I just love watching it with my dinner on a Saturday night!

Urban Myths: Handel & Hendrix is on Sky Arts, 21 October at 10pm.
