‘I’ve never been a big fan of Hollywood showbiz awards ceremonies especially those that involve actors. I still don’t understand why they are televised. The only people who are interested are the ones that are involved, whether it be those who are up for the gongs, or just in the particular business. As far as I can see, there isn’t a single reason to sit through them unless you’re getting paid to, or have been tipped off that you’re going to win. And now they’re even more pointless because they have to be done virtually, because “of Covid”.

Last week it was the Golden Globes and looking at the pictures the next morning I felt embarrassed for all the stars who hired stylists to haul in expensive dresses (Nicole Kidman had hers shipped from Paris to Australia!), hairdressers to spend hours on their finely coiffed barnets, jewellers to adorn them with priceless bling, only to then… er… sit on the sofa and contest with bad lighting, sound delays and bad camera angles. It’s just ridiculous! No red carpet, only the living room rug. No photographers, just hired hands standing around with an iPhone.

I mean, what is the point? The awards are decided by a panel so just announce them and put them in the post for crying out loud, no one cares and it’s so self-indulgent I can’t find the words. It almost makes me angry!

And in a month’s time, we have to see it all again when they do the same thing with the Oscars. It could be worse, I suppose. They could do an actual ceremony with masks, taped off seats and plastic screens everywhere as is now de rigueur for all TV. I hope they don’t though, because that would tip me right over the edge…’
