‘When I first heard back in January that Sex and the City was returning for a new series, I was over the moon, even though Kim Cattrall, who played the show’s strongest character Samantha, wasn’t going to be part of it. But now I’ve seen clips from the filming, I’m not so excited. Of course I’ll still watch it, I’m a super-fan after all and, if nothing else, the clothes will still be fabulous, as will the New York City locations.

But in a way, I kind of wish they hadn’t done it and had quit while they were ahead. The image of three middle-aged women, two with grown-up children, trying to recreate the perfection of the series from 20 years ago, to me, is just a little bit sad.

The lives and friendships of their 30s is how I want to remember it. For their differences, their relationships and conversations, which were all more powerful because most people haven’t settled down at that point. It was all about living life and working out where they were going. More importantly, it wasn’t anything like real life and that’s what made it so enjoyable. Now, it’s no longer called Sex and the City and without Samantha there definitely won’t be any sex or bad behaviour, just, I suspect, mum types talking about their kids, while doing a load of emoting about what was, wasn’t or could have been.

I’ve also read it will feature a lot of new powerful female characters, will be more ‘right-on’, and will include Covid in the storyline. So its new title, And Just Like That, suits it well because, just like that, the fantasy is shattered. I’d say Kim

Cattrall was right to leave it where it was.’
