Meet the pet psychic: I speak to animal spirits

Lizzy Adams is a reiki expert who helps anxious owners to communicate with their animals – past and present…

Closing my eyes, I concentrated on my breathing. In, out, in, out… As I felt my mind and body relax, I repeated the dog’s name over and over again in my head.

‘Taya, Taya, Taya,’ I called out. As the repetition became almost an internal chant, I could see Taya coming towards me in my mind’s eye and feel the love and happiness she felt for her owner, Kayleigh, the woman sitting next to me.

It was 2020, and Taya had passed over the rainbow bridge a few years before, but this was the first time I was using my medium and psychic skills to communicate with an animal that was no longer with us. I was able to see – and feel – residual images, almost like pieces of a puzzle, lit up with flashes of emotion.

The beautiful dog showed me herself running across a beach and sitting in a spot that was close to her heart. As I described the scene to Kayleigh, she nodded. ‘I’ve never told anyone that before, but if I was upset, that’s where I would go and sit with Taya.’

‘Do you feel brushes of air sometimes, when you’re walking upstairs?’ I asked. Even now, Taya’s presence would bound up the stairs with Kayleigh, delighted to be by her beloved owner’s side in some form.

‘She did that all the time as a puppy,’ Kayleigh said, as she admitted she often still felt the air move when she was going up the stairs.

I passed on a message, too… that Taya was sorry she’d had to leave Kayleigh but that it had been her time to go. I could see it was a weight off Kayleigh’s shoulders to hear that Taya was still happy – and by her side. ‘Thank you so much,’ she said to me gratefully.

My day job was doing reiki – healing through energy – with animals, and they all communicated with me, to tell me how they were feeling. And I was lucky enough to be able to read beloved pets and animals that had passed over, too.

Unusual, maybe, but I’d had psychic abilities for as long as I could remember...

From the age of six, I can recall seeing things that other people couldn’t see – and it had terrified me. I had visions of children sitting on the windowsills of my old school building and could feel eyes boring into the back of my head.

Once I walked past an empty car, then turned back to a shadowy woman who had suddenly appeared in the driver’s seat. I ran home, the hairs on the back of my neck prickling. ‘This can’t be real, this can’t be real,’ I repeated to myself.

I had vivid dreams and recurring nightmares, too, where different things would appear to me. I’d had a difficult childhood, but had always found comfort and solace with animals.

By the time I left school, I’d wanted to train as a zookeeper, but ended up in hospitality instead.

Spirits and beings would contact me, but I was too scared to welcome them in. ‘Please don’t show yourself to

me,’ I’d beg them silently.

I couldn’t explain it, but dealing with human spirits just didn’t sit comfortably with me, however much the entities were trying to communicate with me.

When it came to animal spirits, however, I felt completely differently. The energy they gave off was soothing, more innocent, somehow. They’d remain on the outskirts of my consciousness, not quite as invasive.

Then, in 2015, I had my twin girls, Ava and Emily. It was busy, full on and tiring, but they brought me so much happiness. Sadly, two years later, I separated from their dad after 11 years together.

Confused and lost after the breakdown of such a long relationship, I floundered.

Needing to find something to heal myself, the following year, 2018, I did a reiki training course near my home in Dover, Kent. ‘Animal spirits are surrounding you,’ the instructor said perceptively. ‘ You should work with them, rather than people.’

I smiled at her and nodded. She was probably right, but I didn’t see how I could combine the two – until I discovered reiki healing for animals.

I practised on my own dogs, Betty and Louie, and the kids were fascinated watching me work.

I set up my own business, The Tranquil Wolf, on Facebook and created a website, but soon I had customers flocking to me through word of mouth. Especially when they realised I could communicate with animals both here and in the hereafter.

It was incredibly rewarding, and I firmly believe that creatures are messengers.

I recently did a reading with a woman in America, who wanted to know whether her three horses who’d passed were safe and content.

We spoke online and she provided me with pictures and their names. Again, I went into a state of meditation and called the horses forward. Sometimes, the wrong animal wants to communicate, and I’ll have to politely tell them it isn’t their turn. It’s incredibly fascinating.

Two of the three mares were loud, proud and confident, but the third hung back, not wanting to be in the spotlight. ‘That’s how she was in life, too,’ the owner said tearfully, as I relayed the visions the horses were sharing with me.

‘Are they happy?’ she asked. I could feel the horses were content and they showed me snippets of them running around in a huge field. I was relieved to be able to tell her that, yes, they were indeed happy. It’s wonderful to be able to pass on that comfort.

Thankfully, it’s something I’m able to tune in to – and out of.

I took Ava and Emily, now six, to the zoo recently and they adore animals as much as I do. But thankfully, I didn’t have 120 different animal voices clamouring for my attention as we walked through!

If I’d tuned into them, I’m sure they would have shared their feelings and messages, but I try to keep that for when I’m working.

Now, at 35, I continue to carry out animal reiki sessions to help those in need – as well as speaking to beloved pets who have passed over. It’s a gift to be able to bring people the answers they need.
