The Pilgrimage
‘I’ve never walked so far, not wearing Cuban heels!’
Critically-acclaimed reality series Pilgrimage is back, as seven well-known personalities of differing beliefs embark on a 15day journey of spiritual awakening across land and sea, from Ireland to Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The celebrity pilgrims this time are cricketing legend Monty Panesar; actress Louisa Clein; TV personality Nick Hewer; TV presenter Scarlett Moffatt; comedian Shazia Mirza; Paralympian Will Bayley; and last, but anything but least, interior designer, TV personality and pinnacle of sartorial elegance, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, 57 – who tells us more…
What appealed to you about this show?
Faith is fascinating. I’m a non-conforming pagan. Are we happy with this world that doesn’t necessarily need a higher power? We rely so heavily on science. It’s one of those things people simply don’t talk about! That’s why this programme is intriguing. It’s about clearing out your mental closet. I know I seem flouncy and cavalier, but I am capable of existing in the real world. However, I don’t think I’ve walked so far not wearing Cuban heels….
Is it what you expected?
Having seen other Pilgrimages, we thought we might need sun protection – but no, we were the lucky ones that picked the pilgrimage with the rain. It got wetter and wetter! But beyond the different faiths, the different personalities are what come through. It was a lovely thing. I had a nice couple of weeks off!
What was the biggest challenge?
It was uncomfortable. Illuminating for me was that you can get hotel accommodation below one star! Also, the camera crew being practically in the
sleeping bag with you. We came up with elaborate ways of putting our teeth in, without anyone noticing.
What did you learn about yourself?
Who’d have thought I’d be sharing roll-on deodorant with famed England cricketer Monty Panesar? That’s going on my CV… But the power of the experience was the humanity of it.
Doing it together.
With a pretty beautiful backdrop, too…
The Scottish Highlands were incredible – but veiled by mist! I’m relieved that I came through this not having found God. I think God feels the same … ● Pilgrimage: The Road to the Scottish Isles, is on BBC Two and iPlayer from Friday at 9pm.
