New small-capacity GS leads a brace of entry-level adventure bikes for 2017

Based on the G310R (still yet to reach the UK), the new G310GS is a 313cc single with a reversed head – intake on the front, exhaust out the back. It makes 34bhp and weighs 169.5kg. BMW stress it’s ‘proper’ GS, with 19-inch front wheel and familiar styling. If it’s cheap it’ll be great. And price is key, as it has two new rivals. Suzuki’s V†strom 250 is based on the 248cc parallel-twin Inazuma, and has a 12v outlet, rack, built-in pannier mounts and a 300-mile range. Meanwhile Kawasaki launch a Versys-x 300, with long-travel suspension, the Ninja 300’s motor, a 250-mile range and styling that reminds us of the old KLR650.
