From Kirk­wall take the A965 onto the B9055 via the Loch of Sten­ness and fol­low onto the B9056 past the Loch of Skaill WHERE TO PARK: Free car park be­yond the Skara Brae site TER­RAIN: The walk is along the beach, rough grass­land and ex­posed rock by the cliffs com­ing back on con­crete via the loch AC­CES­SI­BIL­ITY: All year round (sum­mer best for breed­ing birds) FA­CIL­I­TIES: In Kirk­wall or Strom­ness PUB­LIC TRANS­PORT: Buses pass the end of Skara Brae daily, al­though in­fre­quently Ad­di­tion­ally, OCTO bus (tel: 01856 871536) op­er­ates a flex­i­ble, ‘by re­quest’ ser­vice to all parts of the west main­land of Orkney.
