Landbirds

Lough (Northumberland) throughout while further singles appeared at Stanwick GP (Northants) on 4th and Tory Island (Co. Donegal) on 14th. A first-summer Bonaparte’s Gull took up residence on the Wansbeck Estuary north of Ashington (Northumberland) throughout June, while an adult Gull-billed Tern arrived at Kinneil Lagoons, Grangemouth (Central Region) on 4th, remaining intermittently until at least 20th, visiting Seton Sands, Edinburgh, on 12th. A further Gull-billed Tern was seen at Ham Wall RSPB (Somerset) on 5th, while the Caspian Tern pair seen in Avon in May relocated to the Lincolnshire coast, visiting Gibraltar Point NNR from 13th-18th. The Swedish-ringed male of the pair also visited Breydon Water (Norfolk) from 19th-22nd before returning to Gibraltar Point on 23rd. A highly mobile White-winged Black Tern visited Connah’s Quay and Burton Mere Wetlands RSPB (Clwyd/cheshire) on 17th, Martin Mere WWT (Lancs) on 18th and Loch of Strathbeg RSPB (Aberdeenshire) on 22nd while a Whiskered Tern remained at Trimley Marshes SWT (Suffolk) from 8th-10th. On the Isle of Portland (Dorset), the first-summer Great Spotted Cuckoo continued to delight admirers until 18th. Alpine Swifts were sighted on St Mary’s (Scilly) on 5th and at Point of Fethard, NNE of North Roe (Shetland) on 26th, with 20 or so Bee-eaters either seen or heard, including a party of three on wires near Holsworthy at Denton (Devon) on 22nd. A singing male red-spotted Bluethroat was on territory in Strathspey (Highland) from 1st-8th, with a female making a very unusual appearance Dalmatian Pelican, Cornwall, June

Caspian Tern, Breydon Water, Norfolk, 25 June at Ness Point, Lowestoft (Suffolk) on 26th, while even more extraordinary was a male Pied Wheatear along Wilmingham Lane, Freshwater (Isle of Wight) on 14th. A single Barred Warbler was seen on Unst (Shetland) in mid June, with reeling male Savi’s Warblers at Overy Dunes (Norfolk) from 22nd-25th and Strumpshaw Fen RSPB (Norfolk) from 27th-30th. A scattering of Marsh Warblers included three in Suffolk; a singing male Blyth’s Reed Warbler was at Rye Harbour NR (East Sussex) from 17th-18th, and a Paddyfield Warbler was at Mire Loch, St Abb’s Head (Borders) on 5th. The long-staying male Great Reed Warbler at Paxton Pits NR (Cambs) remained, singing until 16th while another was at Water’s Edge NR, Barton-on-humber (Lincs) on 5th. Several Icterine Warblers including a singing male on territory at Laggan (Highland) from 1st-21st and Greenish Warblers at The Naze (Essex) on 4th and Skaw, Whalsay (Shetland) on 5th. About 27 Red-backed Shrikes were logged in June, with Woodchat Shrikes at Great Hill near Dorchester (Dorset) from 10th-13th and at St Abb’s Head (Borders) from 19th-21st, the only Rosecoloured Starling involving an adult in Caddington Village (Beds) on 1st-5th and Golden Orioles at Kilnsea/spurn (East Yorks) on 6th and 13th-15th and on Fair Isle on 15th. A White-throated Sparrow was at Vaul, Tiree (Argyll) on 10th. Up to five Serins were at Hodcombe, Beachy Head (East Sussex) from 1st-21st, a singing male Common Rosefinch was at Rosemarkie (Highland) from 6th-10th and a male Black-headed Bunting at a garden feeding station on Skye at Galtrigill (Highland) from 11th-13th. A Rustic Bunting visited the Isle of May (Fife) on 18th.
