MISSING SPECIES

Scientists in the Galápagos may have uncovered the island chain’s first modern bird extinction. The San Cristobal Vermillion Flycatcher, newly separated as a distinct species from the Galapagos Vermillion Flycatcher, has not been seen since 1987. No one is sure why the species has disappeared, but it may be owing to invasive species.
