WAYMARKERS

1 The steep descent into the valley affords glorious views, very typical of midDevon. This is the best spot for Buzzard. As you descend towards the river look out for Rook and Grey Heron – there is a heronry further downriver. 2 Following the woodland tracks, listen for various warblers in spring and summer, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Jay. Regulars such as Blue and Great Tit, Robin and Blackbird are likely, as well as Song Thrush. Keep an eye open for Treecreeper and Nuthatch on the trees flanking the path. 3 At the river, look for Dipper, Grey Wagtail and, with luck good luck, a flash of Kingfisher. 4 In more open areas, Wrens flit between hedges and Dunnock forage at ground level. Green Woodpeckers visit when the grass is short.
