ESSEX

METROPOLIT­AN ESSEX:

Gallions Reach logged an unpreceden­ted 200 Sandwich Terns, hundreds of Common Terns, a few Arctic Terns, two Black Terns, Red Kite and 20 Common Sandpipers. King George V Reservoir had a Sanderling, Pectoral Sandpiper, Garganey, Smew, Goldeneye, Glossy Ibis, Little Gull, Red-necked Grebe, Redstart and Blue-headed Wagtail. Three Glossy Ibises and two Red Kites flew over Buckhurst Hill, with an Osprey over Walthamsto­w and Goshawk over Romford. There were many reports of Spotted Flycatcher­s and Whinchats. Wanstead Flats had two Tree Pipits, a Pied Flycatcher and two Redstarts, with Redstarts at a further five sites. Weald Park had a Wood Warbler. A Hoopoe was at Aldborough Hatch.

MID ESSEX:

Abberton Reservoir logged a Red-necked Grebe, four Black-necked Grebes, five Garganeys, 10 Red-crested Pochards, two Little Stints, two Red Kites, Osprey, Bittern, Spoonbill, seven Curlew Sandpipers and Little Gull. Fingringho­e had Osprey, 400 Black-tailed Godwits, 34 Greenshank­s and 17 Little Terns. A Glossy Ibis, Red-backed Shrike, 17 Curlew Sandpipers and a Garganey were on the Ranges. A Montagu’s Harriers was on Mersea. Ospreys were over Abbotts Hall and Heybridge GP. The pits also held a Little Stint and seven Curlew Sandpipers. Old Hall Marshes produced 17 Spotted Redshanks, 23 Green Sandpipers, a Wood Sandpiper, 12 Curlew Sandpipers and a Wryneck. A Wood Sandpiper was at The Hythe.

N ESSEX:

A Red-backed Shrike, Tree Pipit and two Pied Flycatcher­s were at The Naze. St Osyth had Osprey and Redstart. An Osprey, five Curlew Sandpipers and 31 Greenshank­s were at Mistley. Three Spoonbills roosted at Cattawade. Eleven Curlew Sandpipers and three Little Stints were at Horsey Wade. Frinton logged eight Brent Geese, Little Gull, four Curlew Sandpipers, 112 Whimbrels, five Spotted Redshanks and a Tree Pipit. A Red Kite was at Newport.

RAINHAM MARSHES:

Highlights included Temminck’s and Little Stints, Wood and Curlew Sandpipers, Turnstones, Spotted Redshank, 16 Sandwich Terns, 28 Arctic Terns, three Little Terns, Roseate Tern, two Little Gulls, Med Gulls, 46 Yellow-legged Gulls, Caspian Gull, Garganey, six Pintails, Common Scoter, 44 Little Egrets, Glossy Ibis, Yellow Wagtails, Whinchat, Wheatear, two Spotted Flycatcher­s, two Redstarts, three Tree Pipits, three Cuckoos, Buzzards, Marsh Harriers, seven Hobbies, 11 Kestrels, two Red Kites, Osprey and Goshawk.

SE ESSEX:

Quails were at East Tilbury, Roxwell and Pagelsham Lagoon. River-watching between Thurrock Thameside NP and Tilbury logged maxima of 1,437 Common, one Roseate, 109 Sandwich, 10 Arctic, 29 Little and 26 Black Terns, 1,200 Avocets, Little Gulls, Curlew Sandpipers and Little Stints. Gunners Park logged a Sooty Shearwater, four Spotted Flycatcher­s, Garden Warbler and 30 Willow Warblers. Two Tree Island had 2,000 Black-tailed Godwits and a Curlew Sandpiper. A Hen Harrier passed through South Woodham Ferrers. A Great White Egret, Sabine’s Gull and two Black Terns were off Canvey Point. Blue House Farm held Wood Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpipers, Little Stints, Pectoral Sandpiper and Raven. Vange Marshes had Glossy Ibis, Great White Egret, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Redshanks and three Garganeys. An Osprey and two Red Kites were at Bradwell BO.
