Win­ter­ing num­bers vary greatly, from 40,000 to well over 1.5 mil­lion. In most years, it is of­ten found with its close rel­a­tive, the Chaffinch, but in ‘in­va­sion’ years, large flocks can form, es­pe­cially around Beech wood­land. The white rump is dis­tinc­tive, and even in winter the male has a bright, or­angey breast.
