Wintering numbers vary greatly, from 40,000 to well over 1.5 million. In most years, it is often found with its close relative, the Chaffinch, but in ‘invasion’ years, large flocks can form, especially around Beech woodland. The white rump is distinctiv­e, and even in winter the male has a bright, orangey breast.
