These pass through the UK on their way to western and south­ern Africa, with many re­main­ing all winter. It is par­tic­u­larly well known for form­ing large mixed in­spi­ra­tions with other wader species, seen fly­ing in per­fect for­ma­tion over es­tu­ar­ies and mud­flats such as the Wash, More­cambe Bay and the Thames, Hum­ber and Dee Es­tu­ar­ies. They are strictly coastal birds, with very few turn­ing up in­land.
