These pass through the UK on their way to western and southern Africa, with many remaining all winter. It is particularly well known for forming large mixed inspirations with other wader species, seen flying in perfect formation over estuaries and mudflats such as the Wash, Morecambe Bay and the Thames, Humber and Dee Estuaries. They are strictly coastal birds, with very few turning up inland.
