Can you ID this bird, please
QOn a holiday last December I took the attached photo and I am not sure what it is. It was taken in Santa Rossa National Park, Costa Rica. Is it one of the nighthawks or pauraque, or nightjar? R Quinton
AWe think it’s a Common Nighthawk. Common Pauraque doesn’t show the pale bar on the primaries when its wings are folded, while nighthawks do. Common Nighthawks are, as their name suggests, common and widespread in Central America, and they can show considerable variation in colour (depending on which breeding population a bird comes from). The other possibility would be Lesser Nighthawk, but we would expect one to look greyer.
