WHAT’S IN A NAME?

BULLFINCH

-

The origins of the name of the Bullfinch are somewhat obscure. Most believe that the bull part of the name is a reference to the stocky, neckless appearance of the bird, ie like a bull. Others have speculated that the name may be related to one of its German names, Blutfink (blood finch) referring to the red colour of the breast. Finally, others have suggested that it may derive from Bud Finch (after its diet).
