INVERTEBRATE
SMALL COPPER Although the heady days of wafting butterflies may be over, a few species remain out in force – most on their second broods. One such is possibly the most bad-tempered of its kind, the Small Copper. Fiery of temperament as well as coloration, this butterfly keeps a beady eye on its territory as it basks on open ground. Should it detect an ingressor – of almost whatever size – the copper zips upwards and banishes the insurgent.
