Flycatcher in urban areas

- Ed Hutchings

I’m a bit behind in my reading and have just got round to Kate Risely’s ‘Species Update’ on the Spotted Flycatcher in Bird Watching’s autumn issue. Kate writes that “they are not found in urban areas” and I’m curious to discover whether this is just a British trait? When visiting Talbot House in the centre of Ypres in Belgium, a Spotted Flycatcher held forth in the middle of the garden, sallying back and forth, and quite unperturbed by the numerous visitors wandering around the garden.
