WAYMARKERS

-

1 The harbour creeks attract Shelduck and Little Egret at low tide, plus waders such as Oystercatcher, Curlew, Barand Black-tailed Godwits, Dunlin, Sanderling, Ringed and Grey Plovers and Redshank. Weedstrewn rocks can lure Turnstone, Grey Wagtail and Rock Pipit.

2 Check the wood for passage Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Spotted Flycatcher and maybe an early Redstart. Also home to Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Jay, tits, thrushes and finches.

3 Another good viewpoint to scan for wildfowl and waders in the harbour including Dunlin, Sanderling, Knot and Ringed

Plover. Search for terns, such as Common, Little and Sandwich, plus hirundines and Swifts on the move and at low tide gulls and terns on sandbars. At high tide, there is the chance of a scarce grebe, typically Black-necked. Peregrines and harriers often hunt here. Check the weedy margins beside the track for Stonechat, finches and pipits.

4 The farmland section hosts Linnet, Yellowhammer, Whinchat, Stonechat, Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat in hedgerows, while Hobbies often hunt here for Swallows and martins. Weedy fields are good for migrant Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, flocks of Goldfinch and Linnet, plus Kestrel, Sky Lark, Lapwing, Golden Plover, corvids, partridges, Stock Dove and gulls on tilled fields.
