1Check the trees close to the cliffs for tit flocks that may contain Goldcrest or Treecreepe­r; Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrowhaw­k, Jay, Bullfinch and Mistle Thrush also likely here. A good area for incoming migrants such as Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Willow Warbler and Firecrest. Gardens and scrub may also attract passage Whitethroa­t and Lesser Whitethroa­t and Spotted Flycatcher. Choose an open lookout point to scan for visible migrants such as larks, wagtails, hirundines, thrushes, finches and buntings.

2Try a seawatch overlookin­g the Channel from Mill Point for passing seabirds such as Fulmar, Gannet, red-throated Diver, Cormorant, Brent Goose, Common Scoter, Common and Sandwich Terns, Guillemot, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Arctic and Great Skuas and Kittiwake. Mediterran­ean Gull are often noted among flocks of Black-headed and Common Gulls, plus Cormorant and Great Crested Grebe on the sea and coasting hirundines. The concrete breakwater often attracts Turnstone and rock Pipit, plus Black redstart and Wheatear along the beach.

3Check the harbour at low tide for oystercatc­her, Turnstone, rock Pipit, Grey Wagtail and a variety of gulls, including Mediterran­ean, plus the occasional passage wader, such as Dunlin, ringed Plover or Green Sandpiper. Scan the cliffs for Peregrine, Kestrel, raven and a chance of Black redstart on buildings.
