Bird Watching (UK)

A fast developing reserve in an area rich with birding habitats

- MATT MERRITT

Until it was bought by the RSPB in 2007, this site was a gravel quarry. Even in those days, the area was known for attracting some excellent passage migrants and vagrants, and that has continued; but since then it has also established an enviable reputation as a place to see Great White Egrets and Cattle Egrets, among other goodies.

WHERE TO WATCH

1

As you walk onto the reserve from the Hall, there’s a large heronry, and a rookery, so expect plenty of noise in season!

2

The southern meadow area is a good place to look for hunting Barn Owls, plus possibly Short-eared Owls in winter, while other raptors on site are Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Buzzard. In spring, look for Sky Larks here, too.

3

Check the reedbeds around Fisher’s Mill Pool, as well as the pool itself, for the likes of Reed and Sedge Warblers in summer, as well as Grey Heron, Little Egret, and Great White Egret. Bitterns are often present in winter, and Marsh Harriers are also regular visitors. The scrubby areas here hold a variety of other warblers, including Whitethroat, and maybe Cuckoo, in spring. 4

The Jubilee Wetlands area is the place to check carefully through the wildfowl – as well as the likes of Pochard, Goldeneye and Wigeon, Smew are a distinct possibility in winter. There are scrapes and good wader habitat here, so as well as gatherings of Lapwings in autumn, expect all sorts of other waders going through on passage, with the Tame Valley forming a major migration route.

5

The Lookout is a hide offering wide views over the reserve, and the adjoining river and other birdrich areas. It’s usually open, but check at the entrance when you arrive at the reserve, and get the access code if necessary.
