Bog moss

Mosses in the genus Sphagnum love damp places – from bogs and marshes to damp woodland. The 30-odd species in the UK are tricky to differentiate, but their qualities are well-known and traditionally have been put to good use. The absorbent nature of Sphagnum led to its deployment as nappy substitutes, and its antiseptic properties prompted its service to dress wounds.
