Wear gloves and clean your feeders outside to minimise the risk of contaminating your home

Feeders should be cleaned regularly – ideally weekly. Standard feeders must be disassembled and scrubbed with a disinfectant, rinsed and dried thoroughly. Water baths should be cleaned daily.

Try to keep food fresh and free of moisture to reduce the chance of contamination – change the food if it gets wet.

Ensure old food and droppings do not accumulate where birds feed.

If you see any signs of disease among your garden birds, stop feeding immediately for at least two weeks and thoroughly clean your feeder before using it again.
