The Sykes’s
Warbler found at Blakeney
Point, Norfolk, on 3rd, was the outstanding rarity of September in the region. Also in north Norfolk, a Gull-billed Tern was at Snettisham RSPB (10th), a Fea’s-type petrel was seen off Cley and the Long-billed Dowitcher was still at Potter Heigham Marshes.
CAMBRIDGESHIRE HIGHLIGHTS:
An American Wigeon was at Barleycraft Lake (from 25th). Smithy Fen had a Pectoral Sandpiper (10th-27th), six Curlew Sandpipers, a Wood Sandpiper, three Little Stints and a Pied Flycatcher. A Pectoral Sandpiper was at Burwell Fen (17th-22nd). A Hoopoe was in a Whittlesey garden (29th). A Wryneck was at Great Stukeley (12th). Pied Flycatchers were at Fen Drayton GP (5th-6th), Over (6th) and Monks Wood (11th). Two Redstarts were at Wilbraham Common (9th) and one at the Devil’s Dyke (19th).
Grafham Water had a Great Skua (4th), 20 Black Terns (5th) and two Black-necked Grebes (22nd). Up to five Glossy Ibises were at Fen Drayton (12th-14th), Brownshill Staunch (24th) and Ouse Fen (26th). One was at Barleycraft Lake (25th), with five there (27th). Three flew over Witcham (26th).

ESSEX HIGHLIGHTS:
A dark juvenile Long-tailed Skua flew north at Frinton-on-Sea (2nd). A male Montagu’s Harrier was at Foulness Island (4th). Three Cranes went over East Tilbury (5th). Honey Buzzards were seen at Woodham Fen EWT and Leigh-on-Sea (7th). Abberton Reservoir had a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper (11th-25th), Wood Sandpiper (13th-14th), Spotted Redshank (13th), two Garganey (13th-14th) and 17 Great White Egrets (14th). A first-winter Barred Warbler was at Gunners Park (12th). A White Stork was at Writtle (12th), and one was at Manningtree (23rd), with an unringed bird at Stanway Green (15th-19th). A Black Stork was at Hatfield Heath (16th). A juvenile Purple Heron was at Bowers Marsh RSPB (17th). Blue House Farm EWT had up to two Pectoral Sandpipers (24th-27th). A Wryneck was at The Naze (24th). A juvenile Honey Buzzard was at Ongar Park Wood (24th). A Red-breasted Goose was at Old Hall Marshes RSPB (26th). An American Golden Plover was at Fingringhoe Wick EWT (26th).
NORFOLK HIGHLIGHTS:
A dark-morph Eleonora’s Falcon circled Gayton (6th). Winterton had a Pechora Pipit, Red-breasted Flycatcher and Barred Warbler (1st), Common Rosefinch (17th) and Yellow-browed Warbler (25th). Blakeney Point had a Syke’s Warbler (3rd) and Wrynecks (4th and 20th-21st). Wrynecks were at a further five sites. Barred Warblers were at Burnham Overy Dunes (3rd-8th) and at Salthouse (6th). A Red-breasted Flycatcher was at Trimingham (2nd). A Red-rumped Swallow flew over Mundesley (24th). A Rose-coloured Starling was at Titchwell (from 21st).
A Gull-billed Tern was at Snettisham (11th), with a Dotterel there (4th). Another Dotterel was west of Cawston (2nd). A Long-billed Dowitcher was at Potter Heigham Marshes (4th-29th). Pectoral Sandpipers were at Cley (6th-7th and 19th-20th), Welney (25th-26th) and Titchwell (from 7th, with two 13th and 22nd). Purple Herons were at Barton Broad (1st) and Holme (19th). Honey Buzzards flew over five sites. A Cory’s Shearwater flew past Great Yarmouth (14th), with a Sabine’s Gull past Happisburgh (27th) and Roseate Tern past Cley (29th).
BREYDON WATER:
Highlights include Ospreys on four dates, a White Stork of unknown origin (24th), Great White Egret (28th) and seven Spoonbills. Maxima included 91 Little Egrets, 220 Pinkfeet, 90 Shelducks, 163 Wigeon, 170 Teal, 104 Pintails, seven Shovelers, 26 Oystercatchers, 73 Ringed Plovers, 16 Grey Plovers, 20 Knot, 505 Dunlin, 1,413 Black-tailed Godwits, 18 Bar-tailed Godwits, 651 Curlews, 1,193 Redshanks, seven Common Sandpipers, a Little Stint, three Curlew Sandpipers and a Wood Sandpiper. There was a Hen Harrier, Hobby, Short-eared Owl, Pied Flycatcher, Whinchats, Wheatears, 38 Greenfinches, 110 Goldfinches and 40 Linnets.
NOA HOLME:
Maxima were three Common Sandpipers, two Willow Warblers, three Crossbills, eight Blackcaps, three Lesser Whitethroats, two Spotted Flycatchers, eight Stonechats, five Pied Flycatchers, two Redstarts, four Yellow Wagtails, five Grey Wagtails, two Tree Pipits, 27 Whimbrels, six Wheatears, 63 Common Terns, two Hobbies, 11 Red-throated Divers, three Fulmars, 108 Gannets, 17 Great Crested Grebes, two Whinchats, 320 Pinkfeet, two Pomarine Skuas, 13 Arctic Skuas, 10 Great Skuas, 45 Sandwich Terns, 19 Little Egrets, two Great White Egrets, 248 Curlews, 44 Black-tailed Godwits, six Ruff, 23 Snipe, 16 Guillemots, eight Pintails, seven Kittiwakes, seven Eiders, 973 Common Scoters, five Spoonbills, two Spotted Redshanks, three Greenshanks, 25 Swallows, 15 House Martins, 12 Siskins, four Bearded Tits, nine Chiffchaffs, three Rock Pipits, two Red-breasted Mergansers, 17 Whooper Swans, 38 Brent Geese, 1,900 Oystercatchers, seven Manx Shearwaters and a Velvet Scoter, Scaup, Garganey, Cattle Egret, Long-tailed Skua, Barn Owl, Peregrine, Cuckoo, Kingfisher, Merlin, Green Sandpiper, Purple Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Razorbill, Garden Warbler, Raven and Brambling. a Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, four Lesser Whitethroats, five Herons, 18 Black-tailed Godwits, 19 Snipe, four Green Sandpipers, a Yellow Wagtail and Hobby.
CLEY AREA:
Pied Flycatchers peaked at five. There were eight Little Stints, two Spotted Redshanks, five Wood Sandpipers, two Caspian Gulls, a Crane, two Curlew Sandpipers, a Pectoral Sandpiper, Turtle Dove, Cattle Egret, Sabine’s Gull, Great Northern Diver, two Garganeys, a Short-eared Owl, Brambling, Fieldfare, Black-necked Grebe, four Pomarine Skuas, a Black Tern, Black Guillemot, 1,000 Pinkfeet, three Barnacle Geese, a White-fronted Goose and Velvet Scoter.

A Greenish Warbler was at Thorpeness (2nd). A Wood Warbler was at Dunwich Heath (12th). A Cory’s Shearwater flew past Minsmere (1st), with a Red-backed Shrike there (22nd-25th). Two Wrynecks were at Hollesley (4th), with singles at Landguard (4th-7th), Shelley (6th) and Kessingland (7th). A Lesser Yellowlegs was at Giffords Flash (13th-24th). Pectoral Sandpipers were at Carleton Marshes (19th-20th), Minsmere (20th-29th) and Trimley Marshes (21st). A Dotterel was by North Warren (15th). A Grey Phalarope was at Hazelwood Marshes (30th). A Cory’s Shearwater and two Long-tailed Skuas were off various locations between Thorpeness and Lowestoft (14th). A Sabine’s Gull was tracked north (3rd). A Cory’s or Great Shearwater flew past Minsmere (27th) and Slaughden (28th). Long-tailed Skuas were off Lowestoft (2nd), Southwold (3rd-14th & 27th), Minsmere (13th-14th & 27th), Thorpeness and Dunwich (two on 14th), and Bawdsey (19th and two on 27th). Honey Buzzards flew over Stowmarket (16th) and North Warren (28th).
