EAST ANGLIA

- HIGHLIGHTS:

Highlights Another good month for Abberton Reservoir, Essex, saw a remarkable five Lesser Scaups (including three drakes). A Dutch-ringed White-tailed Eagle was in north Norfolk, where the Redbreaste­d Goose continued to attract admirers.

CAMBRIDGES­HIRE

HIGHLIGHTS: The Ferruginou­s Duck, possibly a hybrid, remained at Fen Drayton (to 7th). Grafham Water had a Green-winged Teal (to 21st), Great Northern Diver (to 12th) and Red-breasted Merganser (18th). Scaup were at Fortrey’s Hall (17th-19th) and St Ives (25th). An Iceland Gull was at Foxton and Dernford Reservoir (1st), and again at Foxton (16th). A Garganey was at Smithy Fen.

A Glaucous Gull was at Cottenham, Long Drove and Smithy Fen (1st-6th and 17th). A White Stork was at Cottenham, Long Drove and Smithy Fen (to 13th), Byron’s Pool (11th) and Waterbeach (15th). ESSEX

HIGHLIGHTS: Abberton Reservoir had up to four Smew (2nd-29th), up to five Lesser Scaup (4th-29th), Black-throated Diver (10th-26th), Black-necked Grebe (12th-17th), up to 11 Scaup (12th-29th), Caspian Gull, Red-crested Pochard and Hen Harrier. Wallasea Island RSPB had a first-winter Red-breasted Goose (4th-12th). A juvenile White-billed Diver was on the sea off Southend, plus up to three Great Northern Divers, Black-throated Diver (10th) and Long-tailed Duck (10th). An adult Black

Brant at Fleet Head, with it or another at South Woodham Ferrers (16th), Heybridge Basin (20th) and West Mersea (25th).

NORFOLK

The Black Scoter remained at Holkham Bay (to 24th). A Green-winged Teal was at Lady Anne’s Drive (to 24th), with presumably the same bird at Burnham Overy Marshes (11th) and North Point (12th-13th). Up to 14 Shore Larks remained in Holkham Bay. A Tundra Bean Goose was on Holkham Freshmarsh (16th). The Red-breasted Goose was seen on and off at Wells, Blakeney Freshmarsh, Cley Marshes and Salthouse. Another was at Lynn Point (1st-4th) and Holme Dunes (10th).

The Pallid Harrier continued to roost at Warham Greens. The Glossy Ibis remained at Stiffkey. A Long-billed Dowitcher was at Breydon Water (9th-11th). A Great Grey Shrike was near Weeting (from 24th). A Glaucous Gull flew past Cley Marshes (22nd). Two Ferruginou­s Ducks remained at Filby Broad (to 13th). Three Smew on Lily Broad, put in a few appearance­s at Rollesby Broad, where there was also a Great Northern Diver (12th). Another Smew was at Hickling Broad throughout. Great Northern Divers were on Ormesby Broad (12th-13th) and at Whitlingha­m CP (12th). One or two were on Barton Broad (to 17th), with a Smew there (18th-19th). Long-tailed Ducks were between Downham Market and Stowbridge (15th-16th and 24th), and at Snettisham (to 15th). Holme Dunes had a Black-throated Diver (to 7th) and Long-tailed Duck (to 3rd). Titchwell had a Black-throated Diver (16th) and Black-necked Grebe (14th).

NOA HOLME: Maxima included 2,000 Pinkfeet, two Goldeneyes, three Red-throated Divers, nine Fulmars, two Water Rails, 1,400 Golden Plovers, 900 Lapwings, six Ruff, five Snipe, three Cetti’s Warblers, five Stonechats, four Rock Pipits, eight Siskins, 33 Eiders, two Long-tailed Ducks, two Greenshank­s, two Barn Owls, 1,000 Common Scoters, four Cattle Egrets, 250 Black-tailed Godwits, two Bramblings, three Tawny Owls, 360 Brent Geese, two Med Gulls, nine Red-breasted Mergansers, three Avocets, 1,200 Wigeon, 220 Curlews and a Black-throated Diver, Goosander, Peregrine, Merlin, Great White Egret, Pintail, Woodcock, Kingfisher, Treecreepe­r, Velvet Scoter, Short-eared Owl, Chiffchaff, Black Redstart, Grey Wagtail Water Pipit and Slavonian Grebe.

NOA REDWELL MARSH: Highlights included six Black-tailed Godwits, three Dunlin, 105 Pinkfeet, 92 Curlews, a Greenshank, 14 Redshanks, a Chiffchaff, two Stonechats and a Cattle Egret. SUFFOLK

HIGHLIGHTS: A Long-billed Dowitcher was at Carlton Marshes (from 2nd). A Ring-necked Duck commuted between The Meare at Thorpeness and North Warren. The Dutch-ringed White-tailed Eagle around Ixworth and Stowlangto­ft was joined by a juvenile, whose parents were Isle of Wight birds. The wild bird was at Tunstall, Minsmere, Westleton Heath, Wangford, Potters Bridge and Southwold (23rd). It, or the other, flew over Icklingham (28th). Long-tailed Duck at Benacre Broad (to 20th). One or two Great Northern Divers were on Lake Lothing and Hamilton Dock (to 10th). Others were at Wherstead Strand (2nd) and Trimley Marshes (23rd). Two Smew were at Hazelwood Marshes. Two Slavonian Grebes were at Stutton Ness (to 2nd) and Alton Water Reservoir (from 4th). Black-necked Grebe at Minsmere (10th). Glossy Ibises were at Hollesley Marshes throughout, and Levington Lagoon (9th). A Lapland Bunting was at Kessinglan­d (to 12th). Robin Chittenden (see above)
