View from the top reveals pace of change on the ground
THE huge hole where Birmingham’s old Central Library once stood is clear to see in a new aerial image of the city.
A Birmingham street photography exhibition, Britain from the Air, has been updated with new aerial images of the city, revealing how much has changed in recent months.
Realising certain parts of the city centre had changed dramatically in recent months, Britain from the Air organisers commissioned new aerial photography to feature in this summer’s display.
The exhibition features almost 100 aerial photographs on display boards around the city centre and runs until September 11.
The new photographs show Central Library almost completely demolished and the latest construction work on the vast Arena Central site that will soon be home to the new UK headquarters of banking giant HSBC.
Another picture shows Grand Central, Rotunda and Bullring.
Retail BID Birmingham helped bring the exhibition to the city after securing sponsorship.
Steve Hewlett, Retail BID manager, said: “These latest images are simply stunning and offer fascinating new views of a city centre that is changing by the day. Despite taking shots back in March the changes have been so drastic we had to re-shoot the pictures again at the end of July to reflect this.
“The stand-out for me is the work on Central Library as the new image shows just how quickly the old building is being taken down to be replaced by the Paradise scheme. It also gives a glimpse of the scale of the development.”
