Sweet heaven – chance to design your own treats using 3D printer
IT’S a sweet lover’s dream – the chance to print your own candy!
A new store in Birmingham is offering sweet-toothed addicts an opportunity to design their own sugary treat with a 3D printer.
Katjes Magic Candy Factory is launching a pilot project to personalise gummy sweets.
You’ll be able to go in and make any candy you can imagine, from 3D shapes and gummy messages to your own drawings and even photos.
You could print your name or even a selfie.
The company was launched in February by Melissa Snover, who is originally from New York but has lived in Birmingham for the past two years.
She says it takes less than five minutes to print any customer’s sugar masterpiece.
The state-of-the-art service is opening as a pop-up shop at The Custard Factory in Digbeth on September 10.
That’s the day the whole place is being turned into a chocolate factory to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. So how does it work? You draw your words or pictures on a tablet, or ping across a picture, logo or photo.
You choose your flavour, then watch as the printer does its magic, using ingredients created by Katjes.
The hardware which makes the magic possible is produced in partnership with US-based Printrbot, which has manufactured the cutting-edge 3D printers to be entirely user-friendly for anyone from children to grandparents.
There are eight flavours to choose from, including Gorgeous Green Apple, Sublime Strawberry, Marvellous Mango and Elegant Elderberry.
All of the flavours are natural, vegan, free from gluten and dairy and made from real fruit and vegetable extracts.
The entire range is also Halal and Kosher friendly, making it suitable and safe for almost anyone to enjoy.
Once you have your 3D candy, you can add a choice of Magic Fizzy, Glitter or Sour Dust to finish off your unique creation.
“Innovation is our life blood here and being able to test some of our new capabilities and developments in Birmingham is a dream come true,” says Melissa.
To think of how far we have come in such a short period of time is remarkable.”
