Broadcaster Robinson to speak at Midland lunch
ONE of the country’s bestknown broadcasters will be the guest of honour at the 2016 Journalists’ Charity West Midlands celebrity lunch in Birmingham.
Nick Robinson, who presents Radio 4’s Today programme, will talk about his life and work, including his confrontations with the world’s most powerful leaders.
There will also be a chance for audience members to pose their own questions.
Mr Robinson’s career spans three decades and he is the only journalist to have been political editor for both ITV and BBC. He recently recovered from cancer which threatened to end his career.
Mr Robinson said: “A healthy society needs journalists willing to provoke public debate and to ask awkward questions. Only a very few will ever get fame or fortune.
“The Journalists’ Charity works for the rest and, therefore, for us all.”
The charity has been staging celebrity lunches in Birmingham since 1993 and has helped raise more than £500,000.
Previous speakers include Sir Michael Parkinson, Chris Tarrant, Sir Richard Branson and Kate Adie.
Midlands branch chairman Derek Inman said: “All our speakers have given up their free time to join us in Birming- ham for our fund-raising lunches. We are very grateful to Nick for agreeing to speak this year so we can maintain our proud record of bringing top class celebrities to the second city.”
The charity provides financial help and advice for journalists and their dependents in times of difficulty as well as running its own care home and sheltered housing.
The lunch will be at Aston Villa FC on November 25. Tickets cost £50 and tables of ten are £475.
