Congestion goes on as roadworks extended

-

DRIVERS will have to wait a little longer for an end to disruption as major roadworks on Birmingham’s Aston Expressway were extended for another two weeks.

Work to repair the A38M and Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham was originally set to be completed by September 5 after running throughout the school summer holidays.

But it has since been announced that overnight closures will continue for a further fortnight, while two narrow lanes on the outbound carriageway will remain in place until the work is completed.

Highways England said the extension of the current scheme would prevent further disruption to motorists of between six to eight weeks during the colder months of the year.

The work is now set to be completed by mid-September.

Andrew Butterfield, Highways England regional divisional director in the Midlands, said: “By completing the work now, we can fully repair this section of the carriageway and reduce the duration of work and more importantly the risk of emergency repairs during the colder and wetter winter months.

“Safety is our No.1 priority and these repairs are vital in helping us to protect this iconic structure for years to come.

“We continue to work closely with Birmingham City Council to manage the repair programme and, although further work is likely in the future, we are making sure that we fully utilise the existing programme of repairs to minimise disruption.”

Motorists have been hit by regular delays heading out of Birmingham throughout the summer with restrictions in place on the northbound carriageway since July.

But drivers were spared a string of planned weekend closures after concrete repair works on part of the elevated roadway were completed ahead of schedule in August.
