£300m plan to create garden square, offices and apartments

-

AMBITIOUS plans for a new £300 million development around a garden square on the edge of Birmingham city centre have been unveiled.

New apartments, commercial units and leisure facilities will be based around the garden square on a 11-acre site off Hagley Road, between the Plough and Harrow pub and Five Ways Island.

The mostly empty 20th century office blocks on the site would be demolished while Grade II-listed 19th century terraced houses fronting Hagley Road would be retained and restored.

Land owner Calthorpe Estates will show the full plans and consult with residents later this month.

Calthorpe Estates have developed the garden square plans in collaboration with regeneration specialist U+I, which is behind major schemes in London, the south east, Manchester and Dublin.

The site is bordered by Plough and Harrow Road, Duchess Road, Francis Road and Hagley Road.

The new residents will benefit from major transport improvements including the extension of the Metro tram network along Hagley Road during the early 2020s.

A spokeswoman said: “Calthorpe Estates’ knowledge of the area and reputation for delivering quality schemes is matched by U+I’s track record of creating vibrant destinations across the UK.

“In recent years U+I has been behind many landmark developments, such as the development of 1.7 million square feet of mixed use space at Paddington Central in London.

“In addition U+I has been appointed to develop the £850 million Mayfield Quarter urban regeneration project in Manchester.”
