Zero hygiene rating for hotel used by stars
FOUR leading Birmingham hotels and restaurants scored a zero hygiene rating during inspections.
Hotel Du Vin, Jury’s Inn, Chung Ying Central and Chung Ying Garden all received the lowest possible score from council inspectors.
Hotel Du Vin, in Church Street, was deemed to be not up to scratch during a routine visit on September 28 this year.
David Beckham, Simon Cowell, West Ham United’s first team squad are among the big names to have stayed at the venue recently.
Inspectors insisted urgent improvement was needed in three areas: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety.
The hotel group insisted was an isolated incident.
A spokesman said: “The Hotel du Vin Group takes any breach of health and safety standards extremely seriously and very quickly rectified the issue that caused the temporary breach. We would like to reassure all stakeholders of our total commitment to maintaining best in class standards”.
Rival hotel Jury’s Inn, in Broad Street, was also told that it must improve hygiene standards immediately. Elsewhere, a popular group of Chinese restaurants blamed a pest control contractor for the low score. Colmore Row restaurant Chung Ying Central and its China Town sister restaurant Chung Ying Garden Restaurant both got a zero.
A spokeswoman for the restaurants said: “We were absolutely dev- that it astated at the results of the inspection in the summer. As a reputable restaurant group that’s been operating in the city for 35 years, we pride ourselves on the highest standards so this zero rating really hit us hard.
“The outcome of the inspection was that our then pest control supplier had not provided the correct services, but we accept that they were our supplier so we had to act fast.
“Their contract was immediately terminated and we found a new pest controller to ensure that the restaurant was back to its highest standards.
“We have since sent staff on to advanced training and now operate a full bill of health as we await the reinspection, but I want to assure our loyal customers that we’re as shocked as they are, and that the problems from last summer were immediately resolved.”
